Vanilla
Quick Definition
Vanilla is the affectionate community shorthand for people who practice conventional monogamy and are not part of the lifestyle or ENM community — used descriptively, not as an insult.
What is Vanilla?
Vanilla is a widely used term across sex-positive and kink communities — including the lifestyle — to describe people who practice conventional, monogamous sexuality and are not involved in any form of ethical non-monogamy, kink, or alternative relationship structure. The flavor metaphor implies simply: plain, standard, without extras — not bad, just different.
Within lifestyle communities, the term is used descriptively and without contempt. Most lifestyle participants have vanilla friends and family, maintain vanilla professional lives, and understand that discretion is important precisely because of the gap between lifestyle culture and vanilla mainstream norms. Many also spent most of their lives as vanilla before discovering the lifestyle.
The term is also used as a modifier — a "vanilla dinner" is a social event with non-lifestyle friends; a "vanilla-friendly" conversation avoids lifestyle-specific references that might confuse or alarm someone unfamiliar with the culture.
Aura is designed with the reality of vanilla-adjacent life in mind. The platform's discretion features — generic notification text, privacy mode, no identifying app icon — exist because lifestyle participants often need to maintain clear separation between their lifestyle presence and their vanilla social and professional world.
