Swap Meet

Quick Definition

A swap meet is an informal lifestyle social event — typically a mixer or gathering — where couples come to meet, socialize, and potentially connect with other couples for future play, borrowing the term from flea market culture.

What is Swap Meet?

Swap meet is an informal, somewhat playful term for a lifestyle social gathering where couples mix and mingle with the explicit social purpose of meeting potential play partners. The name borrows from the flea market context with a wink — rather than trading goods, couples are meeting and assessing compatibility with other couples.

In practice, a swap meet is essentially a themed meet-and-greet with the swap framing made slightly more explicit. It's an off-premise or lightly on-premise social event where the lifestyle context is known to all attendees and the social purpose of finding connections is openly acknowledged.

The term is more commonly used in some regions of the US than others, and its use varies by community and generation within the lifestyle. Newer participants may not recognize it immediately; veteran participants typically do.

Swap meets serve the same social function as meet-and-greets: providing a lower-pressure social context for meeting new couples before any play expectation arises. The name, however, signals a slightly more directly lifestyle-specific framing than the generic "meet and greet" label, which can sometimes be used for non-lifestyle social events as well.

Like other off-premise events, swap meets are valuable as entry points for newer couples and as regular social touchpoints for established community members who want to stay socially active without the intensity of on-premise events.
