What is Red Flag?

Red flag is a widely used term across social contexts, but in the lifestyle community it has specific applications tied to the community's consent culture and etiquette norms. A red flag is a behavior, communication pattern, or profile characteristic that signals — to an experienced observer — a meaningful risk of problematic conduct.

Common red flags in lifestyle interactions include: pressure to move faster than you've indicated you're comfortable with; dismissiveness toward stated limits; profile photos that misrepresent the couple (photos that appear much older, heavily filtered, or inconsistent across the profile); communication that focuses heavily on what the other couple can do for them rather than on mutual connection; rudeness or condescension, particularly toward people they aren't immediately trying to impress; and poor responsiveness to requests for clarification about preferences or limits.

More serious red flags include: disrespect of a "no" in any form; inappropriate physical contact at social events without explicit invitation; attempts to separate partners from each other; alcohol or substance use that impairs someone's ability to consent; and any form of coercion, pressure, or manipulation.

The challenge with red flags is that they can be subtle and that individual instances can sometimes have innocent explanations. A single slightly pushy message doesn't definitively indicate a bad actor. A pattern of them does. Experienced lifestyle participants develop pattern recognition — the ability to identify combinations of signals that, taken together, indicate someone who won't respect limits.
