What is Dress Code?

Dress codes are a common and often underappreciated feature of lifestyle events. They serve several important functions simultaneously: they create visual atmosphere, signal the nature of the event to attendees, distinguish the space as explicitly lifestyle or kink-positive, and often serve as an early comfort-zone expander for newer participants.

Lifestyle event dress codes typically fall into a few common categories. Cocktail or "upscale casual" attire is standard at most off-premise events and more socially-oriented on-premise evenings — the goal is looking put-together and attractive in a conventional social sense. Lingerie or sexy attire codes are common at more explicitly on-premise events — guests are expected to arrive in or change into revealing, playful, or explicitly sensual clothing. Fantasy, fetish, or themed dress codes appear at specialty events and require more specific or elaborate costumes.

For couples new to lifestyle events, dress code requirements can feel intimidating. Many newcomers arrive overdressed in regular going-out clothes at events calling for lingerie attire, or underdressed at cocktail events. Checking the specific dress code and asking the event organizers or community members for guidance before attending is completely normal and appreciated.

Dress codes also serve an implicit consent signaling function — dressing according to a lifestyle event's code signals awareness and acceptance of the nature of the event. This creates a shared context between all attendees that contributes to the specific social dynamic of lifestyle spaces.

For couples who find the dress code component particularly daunting, most well-run events have changing facilities on-site — guests can arrive in regular clothes and change into event attire once they arrive, making the transition from street life to lifestyle event more manageable.
