What is Discretion?

Discretion is one of the foundational values of the lifestyle community — a shared commitment to protecting the privacy of everyone involved in lifestyle participation. It operates both as personal practice (protecting your own information) and as community ethic (protecting others' information with the same care you would want applied to your own).

Discretion reflects a real and important reality: most lifestyle participants maintain at least some degree of separation between their lifestyle and vanilla social worlds. Professionals in certain fields, people in small communities, individuals with public profiles, and parents with school-age children are among the many categories of people for whom exposure of their lifestyle participation could have genuine consequences — professional, social, or familial.

Concretely, discretion means: not discussing the fact that someone participates in the lifestyle with people outside the community without their explicit permission; not sharing photos or identifying information from lifestyle encounters; not revealing the names, locations, or identifying details of community members who haven't consented to that disclosure; and being mindful of your digital footprint in lifestyle spaces.

Discretion also governs behavior in social settings. Seeing someone you know from the lifestyle at a vanilla event means not acknowledging the connection unless they initiate — you have no way of knowing whether they're out to the people they're with. This norm is so standard that experienced lifestyle participants follow it automatically.
