Closed Quad

Quick Definition

A closed quad is a polyfidelitous relationship between four people — typically two couples who have all developed mutual partnerships with one another — forming a committed group exclusive to its four members.

What is Closed Quad?

A closed quad is a relationship configuration involving four people — most commonly two existing couples — who have developed mutual romantic and/or sexual partnerships across all members and agreed to exclusivity within the group. In a full quad, all six possible dyadic relationships are active: both original couples plus the four cross-couple pairs.

Closed quads are more common in the lifestyle community than closed triads, because their origin story is more natural. Two couples meet, develop genuine chemistry and connection over time, and gradually deepen their mutual investment to the point where all four people consider themselves partners with all three others. When this happens organically, quads can be extraordinarily stable and fulfilling — an extended family unit with unusually high levels of intimacy and shared commitment.

The geometry of a quad is complex. Six active relationships require six sets of ongoing attention and communication. Couples within the quad may have different levels of connection with different members of the other couple. Managing these asymmetries with honesty — acknowledging that the connection between A and C might feel different from the connection between B and D — is essential.

Closed quads differ from open lifestyle arrangements in that the four members are not seeking additional connections. On lifestyle platforms, a quad profile or a couple noting that they are "in a closed quad" communicates both the relationship structure and their availability status clearly.

For couples new to the lifestyle, the quad is often held up as an ideal outcome — deep mutual connection with compatible partners who become close friends and lovers across all four members. While genuinely achievable, it's worth noting that it requires time, patience, and genuine mutual compatibility that can't be forced.
