Bi-Curious

Quick Definition

Bi-curious describes someone who identifies primarily as heterosexual but has some degree of openness to or curiosity about same-sex attraction or experience — particularly common in lifestyle community contexts among women.

What is Bi-Curious?

Bi-curious describes a person who identifies primarily as heterosexual but experiences some degree of curiosity about, or openness to, attraction and sexual experience with people of their own gender. The term acknowledges that sexual orientation exists on a spectrum rather than as fixed binary categories, and that curiosity and exploration are valid positions in their own right — not requiring commitment to a new identity label.

In the lifestyle community, bi-curiosity is extremely common, particularly among women. The social environment of lifestyle events — one that is explicitly non-judgmental about sexual exploration, where same-sex contact between women is normalized and often actively enjoyed, and where there is no pressure to label or categorize experiences — creates conditions where many women who might not identify as bisexual in their everyday lives feel comfortable exploring same-sex connection.

Many lifestyle women describe their bi-curiosity as existing specifically in the context of lifestyle play — they are attracted to or enjoy connection with women in the lifestyle context but this doesn't translate into a more general bisexual identity in everyday life. The lifestyle community's generally non-judgmental stance about these distinctions makes this a comfortable position to hold.

Bi-curiosity is not the same as bisexuality, and it's important not to conflate or pressure people to claim labels they don't identify with. Someone who identifies as bi-curious is expressing openness and interest, not making a commitment to a particular identity or to any specific experience.

For couples navigating connections in the lifestyle community, understanding and respecting where potential partners identify on this spectrum — and not making assumptions about behavior based on identity labels — is part of basic lifestyle etiquette.
